Route of the Arcades

The irregular, winding streets of La Fatarella have a characteristic architectural feature: the arcades, which are stretches of street covered with beams and/or stone arches that join several houses. A walk around the streets along this route reveals the town and some of its story.

During seventeenth century, high population growth forced the town beyond the walled area. Today, vestiges can still be seen of these walls and the site of the gateways of the walled compound can be discerned.

Despite the town’s medieval origin, it appears that the settlement at La Fatarella began with a Muslim watchtower. This was located at the current site of the chapel of La Mare de Déu de la Missericòrdia, and its Arabic name of “fatorella” may have given rise to the town’s name, although there are also other etymological theories. There are no remains of the tower but climb to the viewpoint of La Terra Alta provides proof of the magnificent view from this place ande the scope to which the territory could be controlled from this point.
