Environment and climate

The climate of La Fatarella is Mediterranean with a tendency towards continentality, characterised by a period of drought in the summer and low relative humidity. This determines the area's natural environment of plants with small, hardened leaves to prevent water loss in summer. The vegetation consists mainly of areas of low bushes, scrub and shrubs and abounds with plants such as kermes oak, rosemary, Mediteranean heath and dense Aleppo pine forests. Occasional holm and Lusitanian oaks are a vestige of vegetation from times gone by.

The interaction of human activity and the original natural environment over the centuries has produced diverse and quite harmonious rural landscapes. Farming takes up a lartge part of the municipality and there are fields of dry crops of hazelnuts, olives, almonds and grapes on the plains and on the mountainsides. Streams in the valley bottoms provide water to irrigate the small vegetable gardens there.

This excellent mosaic-pattern landscape also features a blend of dry stone buildings and patches of natural vegetation among the fields of crops. It is thus an attractive agricultural landscape, complemented with the rugged landscape of the forest systems in the more abrupt zones of La Fatarella mountain range.
