History

The settlement at La Fatarella is said to have originated with a Muslim watchtower and that its name may come fron the word fatorella (tower in Arabic). There is nevertheless evidence of settlers in the times of the Iberians and remains from the Bronze Age have been found in the Camposines area.

At the time of the Reconquest in the twelfth century, the territory was incorporated into the domain of the Order of the Temple. It is at this time that the settlement charters were awarded: the Camposines charter (independent town until 1842 when, after the Carlist Wars, ti was annexed) in 1208, and later, in 1228, that of La Fatarella. The town was thus established as such during the Middle Ages and featured a walled area that provided its inhabitants with protection. Great population growth in the seventeenth century promoted the extension of this boundary and the current town was established.

The start of the twentieth century saw a period of splendour in the agricultural sector and its population reached 2.497 inyhabitants at its height in 1920. The phylloxera crisis and then the Spanish Civil War prompted economic and demographic decline. Indeed, La Fatarella was one of the stages for the bloody Battle of the Ebro, the las attempt of the Republican troops to stop the Nationalist advance.
